Important Notes from Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI)

You must have valid certificates for Stages One, Two, Three and a Swim Test to apply to the City of Markham. Swim tests are limited to the following dates:

As each seating fills, we will add additional seats. For example, we are currently booking tests at 6:00PM and 1:00PM. When those time slots are full, we will add additional seatings. We are unable to schedule appointment times. It is first come, first served.
 
OFAI does not submit candidate certificates or applications to the City of Markham.  Each candidate is required to submit their application directly to the City of Markham with all the necessary requirements, as per the instructions in their job posting.  The job posting can be found at: www.markham.ca/jobs. NEW – Candidates must possess valid Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service certificates for Stage One, Two, Three and Swim Test. Certificates must be valid throughout the duration of the entire recruitment process.

Job Profile

  1. Public Education - presenting programs and attending public events to promote fire safety awareness.
  2. Fire Prevention - inspecting commercial, industrial and residential buildings; enforcing the Provincial Building and Fire Codes and Municipal by-laws; preparing emergency pre-plans.
  3. Firefighting - handling hose lines, operating firefighting equipment using hand tools.
  4. Rescue Operations - Search and rescue; removing injured persons from motor vehicles, industrial accidents and confined spaces; water rescue.
  5. Hazardous Material Management - controlling toxic spills that may endanger the public or the environment.
  6. Medical Aid - administer First Aid and CPR, in addition to cardiac care using semi-automatic defibrillators.
  7. Maintenance - daily upkeep of grounds, buildings and apparatus.
  8. Wellness and Fitness - Each probationary firefighter has an obligation to remain physically and mentally fit throughout their career to satisfactorily execute duties appropriate to the job.
  9. Other Duties - As assigned including but not limited to training and alarm room.

Hair and Jewellery Policies

The following are Markham Fire and Emergency Services policies regarding hair and jewellery standards. Candidates should consider their ability to adhere to these standards prior to applying.

Hair Standard

As any hair or article that impacts on the efficiency of the inner or outer seal will have an adverse effect on the operation of a self contained breathing apparatus or other device that requires a face fit seal, Markham Fire and Emergency Services personnel shall adhere to the following policy.

It is the policy of the Markham Fire and Emergency Services that each member who may have cause to use self contained breathing apparatus is required to maintain a clean-shaven condition.

Jewellery Standard

To protect personnel from injury caused by the wearing of jewellery while performing certain duties, Markham Fire and Emergency Services personnel shall adhere to the following policy.

It is the policy of the Markham Fire and Emergency Services that jewellery and watches shall not openly contact skin. Therefore, fire suppression and mechanical division personnel, or any member of the fire department performing the duties associated with either division, shall not wear jewellery.

Any article, device or precious metal worn for personal adornment, including rings, bands, bracelets, earrings, chains, and necklaces is defined as jewellery.

Minimum Qualification

  • NEW - possess valid Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service certificates for Stage One, Two and Three and Swim Test. Certificates must be valid throughout the duration of the entire recruitment process. Please visit www.ofai.ca for more information.
  • Be 18 years of age or older and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Be able to work a shift schedule, including days, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Be able to understand and communicate clearly in English, both oral and written.
  • Possess a valid Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License with a satisfactory driver’s abstract dated no more than three months prior to the application date which must be maintained throughout the recruitment process. The driver’s abstract should reflect no demerit points and no more than two infractions (maximum of one moving and one non-moving conviction.
  • Have a minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or academic equivalent.
  • Be able to physically and mentally perform the duties of a firefighter, having regard for one’s own safety and the safety of members of the public
  • Have prescribed 20/30 uncorrected vision in each eye without corrective lenses and with normal colour vision.
  • Have prescribed normal unaided hearing.
  • Have Standard First Aid and CPR level HCP (Health Care Providers) valid for six months after start date of employment.
  • Be criminal record free unless a pardon has been granted under the Criminal Records Act (Canada) with Vulnerable Sector Screening, and has not been revoked.
  • Have a current immunization record for Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Polio, Diptheria, Hepatitis B and Tetanus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Firefighter Pre-Service Education & Training Program or NFPA Firefighter Certification (NFPA 1001 including Fire Fighter I & II)
  • Previous experience in Fire suppression, construction, trades, mechanical, emergency services (e.g. Paramedic), Military/Coast Guard, fire prevention, large vehicle operation, and/or operating heavy equipment
  • Community College diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technician/Technology Program
  • Coaching/Teaching/Counselling/Recreation Leadership
  • Fluency in a second language or sign language
  • Trades Qualification(s)
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) or Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) Training
  • Occupational Health and Safety Training
  • Climbing Skills - Mountain/Rope
  • Medical, Ski Patrol or Other Professional Emergency Service Certification
  • Volunteer and/or community involvement
  • Confined Space Training

Markham Fire and Emergency Services is currently accepting applications for Probationary Firefighters. The application deadline date is September 21, 2017.

Please note that only applications received online prior to the deadline will be considered. You will be required to complete an online questionnaire and upload the required documentation/certifications/licenses etc. when you submit your application. 2. Interviews

Selected candidates will be contacted to schedule interviews.

3. References

Selected candidates will be required to provide 3 recent work related references from either direct supervisors and/or managers. 

4. Conditional Job Offer

Successful Candidates Provided with a Conditional Employment Offer Must:

  • Meet medical standards as determined and assessed by the City of Markham’s appointed physician including proof of Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Hepatitis B and Polio immunization.
  • Provide originals of all credentials referred to on the application form (all credentials submitted must be dated prior to the date of application)
  • Provide a clean vulnerable sector screening check certification.
  • Mandatory attendance for the Orientation, Equipment/Uniform Measurement and Enrollment session prior to the official start date.

      *Candidates will be responsible for any expenses associated with the medical assessment, driver’s abstract and vulnerable sector screening.

5. Training 

All newly hired Probationary Firefighters with Markham Fire and Emergency Services will take part in a training program.
