Important Notes from Ontario Fire Administration Inc.

You must have valid certificates for Stages One, Two, Three and the Swim Test to apply to the City of Brantford.  Swim test dates are limited to the following dates only:

As each seating fills, we will add additional seats. For example, currently we are booking tests at 1:00pm. When that time slot fills, we will add a 2:00pm seating. We are unable to schedule appointment times. It is first come, first served.

The City of Brantford requires your certificates to be valid for the entire recruitment process. The Ontario Fire Administration Inc. does not submit your certificates or application to Brantford.  Each candidate is required to submit their application directly to the City of Brantford with all the necessary requirements as per the instructions in their job posting.  Their job posting can be found at Please also visit their Frequently Asked Questions.

 Brantford Fire Department requires Probationary Firefighters 

We invite you to become a key member of one of our city’s emergency services and experience the rewards of individual and team excellence through the completion of rigorous training and teaching. Our highly acclaimed and qualified Fire Suppression Division requires your commitment and dedication to maintain our level of excellence.

Submission of Applications

All applications must be submitted using our online application form ONLY. The online application is available at Hard copies or emailed copies will not be accepted.

Qualifications must be listed in the following order on resumes:

  • Formal Education
  • Work Experience
  • Professional Qualifications (licenses, certificates, etc.)
  • Community Involvement

Required Qualifications:
To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older;
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Provide an official transcript as proof of grade 12 or the equivalent;
  • Provide an Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Services certificate Stages I, II and III required to be valid throughout the entire recruitment process;
  • Provide a valid Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Swim Test certificate;
  • Provide proof of NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I and II certifications from an accredited program from a recognized institution, accredited by the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board (must be complete with seals);
  • Provide proof of a valid Emergency First Responder or Emergency Medical Responder certificate;
  • Provide proof of a valid Class D Driver’s License with a Z endorsement;
  • Provide a drivers’ abstract (dated within 30 days) to the Corporation at the time of a conditional job offer;
  • Possess superior interpersonal skills and the ability to work co-operatively as a member of an effective and professional team;
  • Have a strong desire to serve the community;
  • Possess the ability and willingness to follow instructions promptly and efficiently and have a strong work ethic.

The following qualities, attributes and qualifications would be preferential:

  • University degree in any discipline (copy to be included with application package);
  • Community College diploma in any discipline (copy to be included with application package);
  • Trade Certification in any discipline recognized by the Ontario College of Trades (copy to be included with application package);
  • EMCA Designation (copy to be included with application package);
  • Previous experience in fire suppression, construction, trades mechanical, emergency medical, large vehicle operation, fire prevention (please define if experience is full-time/part-time/seasonal);
  • Community Service involvement (please define role and commitment level e.g., yearly, monthly, weekly).
A Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check is required, at the candidate’s expense, to be submitted at the time of conditional job offer.
