Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services-Probationary Firefighter
Minimum qualifications:
- Possess a valid Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service certificate including Stage One, Two and Three throughout the entire recruitment process. Please visit www.ofai.ca for more information.
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent

Possess a valid and unrestricted Ontario’s Driver’s License, minimum Class “G” and a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
- Successful applicants must receive a Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License within 6 months of hire date.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C” Level certificate.
- Excellent hearing without the use of artificial aids.
- Visual acuity of 20/30 uncorrected in each eye and colour vision which is safe for firefighting.
- Ability to swim proficiently.
- Effective English communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and precisely in stressful situations
- Criminal Record Search, Vulnerable Sector Screening that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga from the Police Service where you reside at the time of the interview.
- Successfully complete medical, practical and swimming tests during recruitment process.
What would make a preferred applicant?
- Firefighter Pre-Service Education & Training Program or NFPA Firefighter Certification (NFPA 1001 including Fire Fighter I & II)
- Previous experience in Fire suppression, construction, trades mechanical, emergency services (e.g. Paramedic), Military/Coast Guard, fire prevention, large vehicle operation, and/or operating heavy equipment
- Community College diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technician/Technology Program
- Fluency in a second language or sign language
- Trades Qualification(s)
- Lifeguard (NLS Certification)
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) or Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) Training
- Occupational Health and Safety Training
- Climbing Skills - Mountain/Rope
- Medical, Ski Patrol or Other Professional Emergency Service Certification
- Coaching/Teaching/Counselling/Recreation Leadership
- Volunteer and/or community involvement
- Confined Space Training
What do firefighters do?
- Medical Aid - administer First Aid and CPR, in addition to cardiac care using semi-automatic defibrillators.
- Rescue Operations - Search and rescue; removing injured persons from motor vehicles, industrial accidents and confined spaces; water rescue.
- Firefighting - handling hose lines, operating firefighting equipment using hand tools.
- Public Education - presenting programs and attending public events to promote fire safety awareness.
- Fire Prevention - inspecting commercial, industrial and residential buildings; enforcing the Provincial Building and Fire Codes and Municipal by-laws; preparing emergency pre-plans.
- Hazardous Material Management - controlling toxic spills that may endanger the public or the environment.
- Maintenance - daily upkeep of grounds, buildings and apparatus.
On the job training in the above techniques is provided on a continuous basis to all firefighters
Recruitment process
1. Application
- Candidates must possess a valid Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service certificate including Stage One, Two and Three. Certificate must be valid at the time of application and throughout the duration of the entire recruitment process. Please visit www.ofai.ca for more information.
- The City of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services will be accepting applications for firefighters starting October 2, 2107 up to October 15, 2017.
- To submit your application to the Firefighter, please refer to www.mississauga.ca/jobs during the posting period. Please note that only applications received online prior to the deadline will be considered. You will be required to complete an online questionnaire when you submit your application. Please fill this out completely. Once you have successfully submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email informing you that your application has been successfully sent.

2. Interviews
Selected candidates will be contacted to schedule first round interviews and second round interviews
- First Round interview panel typically consists of Fire District Chiefs.
- Second Round interview panel typically consists of the Fire Chief and/or Assistant Chief(s).

Selected candidates will be required to provide 3 work related references from either direct supervisors and/or managers.
4. Conditional Job Offer
The offer of employment is conditional upon:
- Successful completion of the training period.
- Successful completion of a twelve -month probationary period.
- Maintaining a valid and unrestricted Ontario’s Driver’s License, minimum Class “G” and a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
- Successful applicants must receive a Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License within 6 months of hire date.
- Criminal Record Search Certificate (Vulnerable Sector Screening), to verify you do not have a Criminal Record for which you have not received a record suspension (pardon).
5. Training
All newly hired firefighters with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services embarks on a 12 to 14 week training program at our training facilities at the Garry W. Morden Centre which is located at:
