You must have valid certificates for Stages One, Two, and Three to receive a job offer from the City of Owen Sound.
 
OFAI does not submit candidate certificates or applications to the City of Owen Sound. The Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services Department is currently recruiting candidates for a full-time Firefighter Candidate Pool. Successful applicants from the candidate pool will join a team of professionals responsible for combating and extinguishing fires, prevention of fires, protection of person and properties, emergency medical response, and carrying out water/ice rescue operations.

APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FROM SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 22, 2018 AT NOON.

To be eligible for consideration you must:

  • Have reached 18 years of age and be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be able to understand and communicate clearly (orally and written) in English.
  • Have uncorrected 20/30 vision in each eye, satisfactory peripheral and colour vision, and hearing (without artificial aids) that meet the standards for safe firefighting
  • Have received a secondary school graduation certificate or equivalent
  • Proof of certification or grandfathering of NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2
  • Hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted Ontario Driver’s Licence Class “D” with a “Z” endorsement (or out of province) or equivalent and a clean drivers abstract.
  • Hold a valid Standard First Aid and CPR “C” Level (Basic Rescuer) certificates.
  • Be able to handle intense and sustained physical effort necessary to safely perform firefighting duties
  • Have no criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
  • Be able to respond to fire calls within a reasonable amount of time.
  • Must successfully complete and be in possession of valid Candidate Testing Services Certificates from Ontario Fire Administration, all three(3) stages, prior to job offer.

Application Submission Requirements:

1.  Cover Letter and Resume in the format listed below
2.  Valid copies of certificates and licenses
3.  Copies of CTS certificates, if currently certified.

1.  Resume Format

Candidates are asked to submit a resume in the format outlined below:
 
A.  A cover letter with your Name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address and explanation of why you would like to work for the Owen Sound Fire & Emergency Services.
B.  A resume with your Name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address and the following headings and corresponding information in list form below each heading: Education, Firefighting Experience, Employment Experience, Certificates & Licences (listing all required certificates and licences outlined above with expiration dates if applicable, including driver’s license and all other related certificates). Additional information that does not fit into the above noted categories that may be relevant to the position can be added.
C.  Fonts on cover letter and resume shall be 12pt.

2.  Certificates

Candidates are asked to provide valid copies of all required certificates and licenses as well as 
any other related certificates listed on their resume.
 
The selection process:
  • Applicants will be short listed based on their application package and top scoring candidates will be invited to attend an interview.
  • Top scoring candidates from the interview process will be asked to complete a Work Personality Index Test
  • A ranked eligibility list of qualified candidates from the interview and work personality index testing phases of recruitment process will be developed.
  • Qualified candidates will be advised of their placement on the ranked eligibility list.
  • Vacant Fire Fighter positions will be filled through the ranked eligibility list.
Please be advised, the City of Owen Sound will be using both email and telephone to communicate 
with applicants regarding the candidate pool. It is the applicant’s responsibility to include a current phone number as well as current email address that is checked daily and accepts emails from unknown users. As we send time Sensitive correspondence via email (i.e. testing bookings, interview dates), it is imperative that applicants check their email regularly. If we do not hear back from applicants in a timely manner, we will assume they are no longer Interested in the candidate pool and the application will be removed from the process.

3.  Ontario Fire Administration Inc. – Candidate Testing Services (CTS) Certificates

The successful candidates of the candidate pool will be required to submit CTS Certificates (3 stages) from the Ontario Fire Administration, prior to a job offer. Ontario Fire Administration Inc. provides a standardized and uniform approach to the candidate testing process for candidates pursuing a firefighting career in municipal fire departments in Ontario.
 
The Ontario Fire Administration Inc. Candidate Testing Services (OFAI CTS) will enable those individuals whose aptitude, interpersonal skills, physical abilitiesand practical firefighting skills align with the needs of municipal fire services, to pass through the system.   When a candidate successfully obtains their OFAI CTS certificate, they are ready to apply to the City of Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services. Only those candidates with a valid CTS certificates will be considered.

The Ontario Fire Administration Inc. Candidate Testing Services (CTS) consists of six (6) steps:
 
The following outlines all of the OFAI assessments in Step Four which, if passed successfully, will enable you to receive your OFAI CTS certificates.  These certifications will enable you to apply to City of Owen Sound Firefighter Candidate Pool.  It is important to note that all candidates must follow the testing process as outlined, by each stage. Everyone starts at Stage One and continues through the process.  If a candidate does not pass one assessment, they cannot continue to the next assessment.  In addition, candidates will only pay for the assessments that they take.
 
  1. Stage One - National Fire Select Test
  2. Stage Two, Part One - Medical Screening
  3. Stage Two, Part Two - Clinical Assessment
  4. CPAT Orientation (optional)
  5. Stage Three, Part One - Candidate Physical Ability Test
  6. Stage Three, Part Two - Firefighter Technical Skills Assessment
Note: Transportation costs and any fees associated with the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. screening and testing will be the responsibility of the candidate.
