Paid on Call Firefighters 

Located just north of Toronto in the Region of York, The Town of East Gwillimbury offers a fully balanced lifestyle and a wonderful place to live and work. Job Duties

The primary function of a POC Firefighter is to protect and mitigate the community from a wide variety of emergencies & non-emergency events. POC Firefighters carry out active, community education and fire prevention activities, fire suppression, as well as participating in the promotion of an environment of public safety. Duties specifically involve fire prevention and inspection activities, community education as well as vehicle and equipment maintenance.  POC Firefighters are active participants in ongoing training dealing with all phases of fire suppression including inspection, rescue and emergency operations/medical support.   

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must reside or work within the boundaries of East Gwillimbury.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant or work permit).
  • Grade 12 level education or equivalent (e.g. General Education Diploma).
  • Hold and produce a valid Ontario driver's license, and have a good driving record with no more than six (6) demerits.
  • Possess a valid CPR certification as well as a First Aid certificate  (or current Red Cross First Responder program)
  • Be capable of handling intense and sustained physical effort.
  • Pass a recognized health/fitness assessment as approved by the Town dated no later than six (6) months prior to hire date.
  • Obtain medical clearance including  meeting the prescribed hearing and visual requirements (20/30 in each eye without corrective lenses) and possess no significant colour vision abnormalities
  • Able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Security Check
  • Possess high standards of work ethics, professionalism, team orientation, and well-developed interpersonal skills.

Additional Assets

  • Possess a Class “D” license, D-Z preferred
  • Pre-Service Fire Fighter Education & Training Program Certification, OR
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I & II certified from an accredited program from a recognized institution, accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the Pro Board, OR
  • OFM curriculum components 1,2 and 3 with examination certificate, OR
  • Minimum (2) years experience as a full-time firefighter in a municipal fire department, OR
  • Minimum (5) years experience as a part-time firefighter in a municipal fire department.

Phase 1 – Pre-qualification Testing

Candidates are responsible for scheduling and completing the following through OFAI at FESTI:

  • National Fire Select Test 

Stage Two

  • Medical Screening
  • Clinical Assessment 
  • CPAT Orientation (Optional)

Stage Three

  • Candidate Physical Fitness Test 

* Fees incurred for mandatory testing will be at the candidate’s expense.
**Testing certificates from each stage must accompany the application in Phase 3
