Job Summary

The City of Pickering is seeking dedicated and motivated individuals to join our team as Probationary Firefighters. The successful candidate will respond to emergency incidents to protect life, health, and property. Additional responsibilities include training, pre‑incident planning, vehicle and station maintenance, and participating in public education and fire prevention programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs fire ground operations including fire suppression, salvage, and overhaul.
  • Conducts specialized rescue operations including auto extrication, rope rescue, and water/ice rescue.
  • Provides emergency medical care in accordance with current industry standards.
  • Participates in fire prevention and public education activities.
  • Participates in and completes all assigned training.
  • Assists the Captain with pre‑incident planning surveys and inspections.
  • Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance following current practices.
  • Maintains station cleanliness and conducts routine housekeeping duties.

Education and Experience

  • Successful completion of secondary school and a post‑secondary Pre‑Service Firefighter Education & Training Program, or acceptable equivalent.
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter Level I and Level II (IFSAC or Pro Board).
  • Valid OFAI Candidate Testing Service (CTS) Stages One, Two, and Three including the Swim Test – all certifications must be valid until January 9, 2026.
  • Demonstrated medical and physical fitness to perform prolonged and/or dangerous work under adverse conditions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to quickly assess risk.
  • Valid Class D Ontario Driver’s License with Z endorsement; clean driving record preferred.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR‑C.
  • Willingness to participate in Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training.
  • Willingness to participate in computer‑based training.
  • Clear and concise communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge of municipal geography, hydrant locations, and building layouts (preferred).
  • Proficiency with Windows‑based computer applications.
  • Ability to safely operate mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to work rotating 24‑hour shifts including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to meet all conditions including Criminal Reference Check requirements.
